Why Trusted Civil Organizations Are Key in Fighting Online Antisemitism

Reading time: 6 minutes | Word count: 540

Online antisemitism spiked 300% in 2024, especially after the October 7 Hamas attack. FOA responded with impact — using AI, a global network of 5,000 volunteers, and our “Trusted Flagger” status to monitor, report, and remove harmful content across major platforms. Our 2024 Annual Report highlights why civil organizations like FOA are essential in protecting communities and pushing tech companies to act.

FOA has been, and remains, a leading force in fighting online antisemitism. In 2024, it became clearer than ever that strong, strategic partnerships between civil society organizations and social media platforms are essential to protect Jewish users and the broader online community.

The Numbers Behind Antisemitic Content Removal

As reported in the Report, we monitored and reported tens of thousands of posts containing antisemitic hate speech, disinformation, and incitement. Thanks to our unique approach — merging AI to detect hate speech with volunteer reporting — our content removal success rate rose from 15% in 2023 to 25% in 2024. Posts flagged by FOA had nearly twice the takedown rate compared to standard user reports.

In 2024, our work reinforced a critical truth: combating digital hate requires civil organizations, social media policy reform, and rapid response systems — not passive observation.

Why Trusted Status Matters

Without trusted civil organizations like FOA, much of the antisemitic content on social media would remain online — inciting violence and spreading disinformation. As a nonprofit fighting antisemitism, FOA plays a crucial role in escalating serious cases and influencing platform moderation. Our trusted status with Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and X ensures faster response and greater impact.

In 2025 and beyond

2025 and the next few years are shaping up to be a major challenge in the global fight against online antisemitism.

In Europe, new legislation holds platforms accountable for moderating hate speech online. In contrast, the U.S. embraces free speech policies, potentially allowing antisemitic content to go unchecked. Despite differences in regulation, one solution stands out: platforms increasingly rely on trusted civil society partners to report hate speech, fact-check disinformation, and protect user rights.

As 2025 unfolds, the need for trusted civil organizations like FOA will only grow. Regardless of government policy our mission remains the same: protecting dignity, truth, and safety online.

FOA’s roadmap for 2025–2026 is ambitious and bold:

  • Achieve a 50% antisemitic content removal rate.
  • Expand AI models to better detect antisemitism online.
  • Expand our international network of volunteers and partners.
  • Push for international laws targeting antisemitic hate disguised as “free speech”.
